I thought this movie worked on many levels. Besides being just plain fun it was also a “message movie” with great imagery. It will please both chauvinistic pigs like me and clam bumping dykes.
FYI for Austinites who do not know this was filmed at Hamilton Pool.
Vagina symbols throughout the movie. The yawning cave at the pool had a row of stalagtites, there were trees with gaping holes at their bases. Despite this you do not see ANY pink what so ever.
I viewed it as an empowering film for Feminists. Some of them might argue though that the heroine was only able to “strike back” when she was being passive and men were penetrating her.
This movie looked and felt much like Charles Burns’ Black Hole comic. Mitchell Lichtenstein’s father’s artwork (Roy Lichtenstein) and Burns’ artwork are very similar. The story of a sexually transmitted disease creating mutants out of high school students is close to Mitchell’s story.
