3D movies and astigmatism
With the up coming Avatar and previous other 3D movies this year it is obvious Hollywood is pushing 3D to get people back into the theaters. However I myself can't help but feel left out. I have a form of astigmatism and I am extremely right eye dominant. The old red and blue 3D glasses never worked for me. I haven't seen a new movie yet that uses whatever 3D technology that goes into movies like Avatar. Is this technology different enough that I might be able to see the movie in 3D like everybody else? Or does anybody with astigmatism or eye dominance problems have experience with todays 3D movies, like blurry picture or sickness?

I have an astigmatism in my right eye as well. Even with the new technology that is out there today, whenever something 3D moves across the screen and I have to track it with my eyes, I loose the 3D effect and get a touch blurry, but not enough to ruin the whole movie.

There are three different means for 3D movies. The trick is to get each eye to see slightly different images.
(1) red/green or red/blue glasses
Two images are shown at once, one in each color. The eye will only see the appropriate immage.
(2) glasses with polarized lenses where the polarization of the lenses are at right angles to each other
Two images are projected in polarized light at right angles to each other.
(3) glasses with liquid crystal "shutters" so that when one lens is open, the other is closed.
One image at a time is shown. The shutters are synced with the images.
I think that the shutter goggles are the most common. I've not seen any of the 3D movies, but in grad school I was involved in virtual reality simulations. I have a fairly severe astigmatism in my right eye and was able to see the images. Unfortunately, I also became quite motion sick (which I only get in 3D simulations, oddly enough).

The new Digital 3D doesn't use the red/blue glasses shit that gave me a headache.
You get glasses that look like this.....
and the movie is 3D no matter what eye you look out of. It's really revolutionary and I saw UP in Digital 3D and it kicked ass because you could take the glasses off at anytime and the movie was still watchable. Find a theater close by that is playing a movie in Digital 3D and go see it, you won't be disappointed.
