You don't know how long 2 1/2 hours is until you sit through this movie. Kubrick's films are hit and miss. This is a colossal miss. Don't believe the hype.
That I expect you to answer for your review, as I have stated repeatedly, both implicitly and explicitly. That I value filmmaking enough to evaluate it by its own merits. That doing so is a rewarding experience and the very reason I read reviews (and make films) in the first place.
It says that I'm offended by your inability to treat it as more than a means of attracting attention. That the medium is worth defending. That criticism matters.
I've defended my point repeatedly. It's your turn. No more citing prerogative (you're not even using that word correctly). No more ad hominem attacks. No more excuses about typing fatigue. You felt your opinion was worth sharing, so share it, but give the film the same respect in your scrutiny that we're giving you by addressing what you actually wrote.
Either tell everyone how you came to your conclusions or defend the review as it stands. If you can't do that, then don't even bother replying.
You're a dick, and this movie sucks. End of story. Not intelligent or thought provoking you say? Well this is my discussion that I started. You came into it on your own. No one made you.
Attracting attention you say? Who's more wrong: the guy that wants attention or the people that give it to him. Had none of you responded I could be watching "Owning Mahoney" right now, but instead I'm typing this shit a response to so much unnecessary hatred over a few weak sentences. If you don't like a movie most people think is good you're automatically a troll. You people are the trolls, coming on here and antagonizing me.
You want to have a long chat about film criticism and "2001: A Space Odyssey", make your own topic. It would be a better use of time. Maybe we can discuss the connections between Charles Foster Kane and William Randolph Hearst. Or is that too touchy of a topic. You don't want to know how much I hate "Citizen Kane".
Perhaps you're right, though. Sometimes my sarcastic tone can often obscure what I'm actually trying to say.
It was never my intention to antagonize you, and I apologize for being so condescending.
However, you began a discussion thread. You opened yourself to scrutiny. And when your reasoning was challenged, you made personal attacks and insults.
I'll grant you that I'm a dick (the term is so vague in this context that I really can't argue it), but I am not a troll. My motives (however poorly displayed) were to engage with you on the discussion topic you yourself started. I criticized only your assertions (despite coming across as more aggressive than I should've).
I think respectfully engaging in each other's criticisms in an adult manner would benefit you. It would certainly benefit me (in both film appreciation and my own filmmaking). It may even benefit some of the others on this thread.
I'm always interested in opposing viewpoints (I'd sincerely love to get your thoughts on Kane, since you bring it up), but I expect others to hold their opinions accountable. Likewise, I expect others to scrutinize the reasoning behind my own opinions with equal ruthlessness.
Understand, I'm not an evangelist. NO film is above criticism, and every film offers plenty to criticize. Likewise, every film deserves critical thought, rather than hollow statements of opinion.
If you have no objection, I'd like to wipe the metaphorical slate clean and try again to have a reasoned discussion on the film and your opinions of it. I humbly challenge you to defend your assertions and conclusions about the film and to consider opposing viewpoints with an open mind. (In other words, neither of us gets to say "It sucks/rocks! End of story!")
If you object, then I'll drop it. No hard feelings. If you do refuse, though, I only ask that you please give an explanation for doing so. You were, after all, the one who began the discussion.
No jackass, I'm the ass bole that "dissed" your Dark Knight review because it was nothing but glowing praise seven months after the movie came out and everybody was already beyond tired to death of hearing about it.
Why, who exactly are you supposed to be?
My last post already explained why you're a troll for doing this.
You've pretty much admitted to being a troll by saying,
"A few half-assed sentences work just as well."
This confirms my supposition that you've simply written this "review" to get a rise out of people and feed off their attention.
No seriously, you are entitled to your opinion and I do partly agree with you, 2001 IS a sloooowww, boring film scene for scene. BUT if you start thinking about the message that the film is trying to convey the results are startling. By "message" I mean what the film saying about the evolution of mankind, how technology leads to man's advancement and also to catastrophe and to finally to become quite literary, God like.
I think of it this way and begin it every time.
This was made before there were humans on the moon.
It's also worth noting that the film is made up of short films.
Also you should note what it helped inspire. Both Spielberg and Cameron state that it did a lot for their careers.
Yes, the pace is slow and often people fail to feel that there is a pay off. I don't think it's bad you find it boring. I think if you want to try to enjoy Kubrick and 2001 pick up the new DVD version of the film and watch the extras to get an idea what Kubrick and Clarke were trying to do.
