You don't know how long 2 1/2 hours is until you sit through this movie. Kubrick's films are hit and miss. This is a colossal miss. Don't believe the hype.

Detailed review you got there, slick. Totally convincing. I especially liked the part of your review where you totally persuaded me towards your opinion. It was riveting stuff, man.
I would reccommend a second viewing. Personally I thought the same thing about the movie the first time I saw it but I gave it a second chance. After that I have watched it countless times and it is one my favorite films.
Except it's not the end of story. Your opinion doesn't matter half as much as your reasoning in watching it. If you can't back yourself up, don't even bother.

Excellent review. A brilliant analysis of Kubrick's finest work. Although next time try going a little slow on the details, too many may ruin a great review.
Which hype is that? The hype that 2001 is a slow, meditative sci fi film that immerses itself in the isolation of deep space travel? One which makes demands on the audience's imagination and challenges the very notion of personhood while realistically (almost clinically) addressing first contact with a higher intelligence?
No it's just about a director who's obsessed with his own craft, to the point where he drags 30 minutes of story to 2.5 hours.
Kubrick: God damnit man, we spent months building these sets! We have to shoot as much footage as possible. Boring you say? Add some opera music to go with it. Now that's a picture! How do we end this thing? I don't know, show a giant baby or some shit like that.
The movie's about a director? Here I thought it was about astronauts. See, this is why the world needs your detailed reviews, to clear these things up.
I actually bought into the hype that 2001 was slow movie about astronauts. It turns out that it's a Kubrick biopic: not slow (that would follow the hype), but still boring.
